My Dual Earphone Setup for Life in Japan: From Home Podcasts to Shinkansen Travel

When it comes to my daily tech setup, I’ve found a perfect balance between two different worlds. Today, I want to share the two earphones that power my daily life here in Japan.

My Daily Driver for Home: Victor HA-NP1T

My primary earphones are the Victor HA-NP1T. For those who might not know, Victor is a historic Japanese audio brand (under JVCKenwood) known for its quality. These are “ear-cuff” style earphones that don’t plug directly into your ear canal.

I mostly use them at home. They are absolutely perfect for listening to the radio or catching up on my favorite podcasts while I move around the house. Since they don’t block my ears, I can stay aware of my surroundings while enjoying clear audio.

The Travel Essential: AirPods 4 ANC

However, my setup changes completely when I step out for long-distance business trips. When I’m riding the Shinkansen (Japan’s famous bullet train), the ambient noise—the hum of the tracks and the rush of wind—is quite intense. In that environment, the ear-cuff style just doesn’t cut it.

That’s where my AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) comes in. These are strictly for “outdoor use.” To keep them protected during my travels, I’ve paired them with a ZEROSHOCK Lock Case from Elecom, another prominent Japanese electronics brand. I chose this specific case because it’s fully focused on impact resistance—it’s rugged, secure, and gives me peace of mind in my bag.

A Surprising Discovery about Sound Quality

Because I mainly use the AirPods 4 ANC to block out noise on the Shinkansen, I never really took the time to “savor” the actual sound quality. I viewed them more as a tool for silence than for music.

But recently, I decided to use them in the quiet environment of my home. I was honestly shocked. The clarity of the audio and the punchy bass were much better than I had realized. I simply hadn’t noticed their true potential because of the background noise of the train. For an everyday user like me, the sound quality is more than satisfying.

Tip for Shoppers

If you’re considering picking up a pair, keep an eye on Amazon. In Japan, the AirPods 4 ANC frequently goes on sale. If you’re looking to upgrade your travel kit, I highly recommend waiting for one of those discount windows to snag a deal!
